Wanted Dead or Alive is my take on the kind of cowboy I grew up fascinated by; the rough, weathered characters of old Westerns who always seemed to carry a whole story in their face. I wanted him to feel less like a portrait of one particular person and more like a character pulled from an old outlaw legend: hardened by the West, a little dangerous, and an untold backstory. I painted this piece in my signature red and teal palette, using the bright red almost like an emotion rather than a realistic color. Against the turquoise, the cowboy and curling smoke feel intense and alive. It’s that contrast I love most in my work; taking imagery that feels deeply rooted in the past and giving it an energy that feels entirely new.
