Wolf Robe is a tribute to Ho'néhevotoomáhe (1840–1910), a Southern Cheyenne chief whose life reflects a powerful chapter in the history of the American West. During the 1870s, Wolf Robe and his people were forced from their ancestral plains and relocated to the Cheyenne and Arapaho Reservation in Oklahoma. Despite the hardships and tremendous changes his people endured, he became a respected leader and was awarded the Benjamin Harrison Peace Medal for his assistance with the Cherokee Commission.
Through this painting, I wanted to honor not only the man himself, but also the strength, resilience, and enduring spirit of the Southern Cheyenne people. His story is one of leadership, survival, and a history deeply connected to the land I call home.
